A healthy mind and
a healthy body are prerequisites for great achievers. History shows that young individuals
who excelled in the field of sports could prove their worth in the battlefield
as valiant soldiers in later life and get the laurels of victory.
Sports are an exciting source of
recreation. They instil a sportive spirit to take up the heavy burden of life. It
aids in maintaining health and physical fitness and foster team-spirit and
impart a sense of discipline and value of time, how it is important that even a
fraction of second decides the outcome of a competition. Sports are the right
avenues to channelize energy and vitality for students and make their leisure
hours worthwhile. The spirit of competition is inculcated along with enhancing physical
fitness. The greatest educational value of the sports is to provide stimulation
for study and for hard work to meet the challenges in future life.
Sportspersons are
more disciplined, cheerful, optimistic, cooperative, accommodating and Samaritan
than others. Sports teach us to deal effectively with failure. Physical
activities also provide an outlet for the surplus energy. Sports should be balanced
with academic pursuits.
Nelson Mandela is quoted to have said “Sport
has the power to change the world… it has the power to inspire. It has the
power to unite people in in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in
a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only
despair. It is more powerful than the governments in breaking down racial
barriers.”
