How Desert Coolers Are Better Than Air-Conditioners

A desert air cooler is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Evaporative cooling differs from typical air conditioning systems which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles.

For centuries civilizations have been coming up with their own clever versions of today's air cooler. In Persia a wind catcher was invented thousands of years ago that used the process of evaporative cooling. Shafts on the roof would catch wind and then it would pass through water, blowing cold air into a building.

In 1820 it was discovered that compressing and liquefying ammonia could chill air when it was allowed to evaporate. Then in 1902 the first modern electrical air conditioner was invented for the actual application of temperature cooling for a printing plant.

Air Conditioners can significantly increase electricity bills is a known fact yet many people buy it thinking that buying an air conditioner has become a necessity. While we can agree to an extent to the fact that temperatures have increase a bit in last century, but it is not that the life was difficult when there were no air conditioners.

They take the internal air in a room and cool it down to the temperature set on the thermostat. They also remove the moisture from the air and make it dry. So all in all, the same dry air keeps getting circulated in the room.

Whereas in case of Desert Coolers, fresh outside air is taken, passed through an evaporative pad containing water, cooled and pushed in the room. The hot dry air cools down when it comes in contact with water on the evaporative pad. Although there is no option to control the temperature in air coolers, but it always supplies fresh air. Unlike air conditioners which cause respiratory infections and skin problems, this air cooler comes with a humidifier that keeps your air fresh and clean.

If going green is something that you are concerned about, and then Air Coolers are the best option for you. Air Coolers use water as refrigerant, whereas Air Conditioners use CFCs or Chlorofluorocarbons that are harmful for the environment.

If a cooler works in your area, it is much more environment friendly than ACs. Even the United Nations General Assembly designated September 16th as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Hence I reinforce my point that a desert cooler is better than an air conditioner as it has lower operational and running costs, supply’s fresh air, is a cleaner option as they consume 80-90% less electricity and are CFC free.
